INFORMATION AND RECOMMENDATIONS
A certificate of conformity of your kayak in accordance with Division 245 is provided with your boat, along with an operating manual and
instructions on the safety equipment required on board (basic equipment up to 2 miles from a shelter, coastal equipment up to 6 miles from
a shelter). These documents must be read, respected and kept.
Division 245 defines the technical and construction requirements for ships not subject to CE marking.
Canoes and kayaks longer than 3.50 metres must also comply with the technical provisions of Division 245 (section 245-4.03).
The compliance of the boat with the requirements of Division 245 is certified by :
• the certificate of conformity, and ;
• the owner’s manual.
Each new boat subject to the provisions of Division 245 must be identified :
• by a unique identification number ;
• by a nameplate.
The certificate of conformity must be presented for registration to the DDTM (Direction Départementales des Territoires et de la
Mer) - délégations à la Mer et au Littoral. See the contact details and the article on the registration of a pleasure boat.
These provisions cannot exempt other provisions applicable to these vessels (such as customs provisions, etc.).
Equipment for the arming and safety of pleasure craft
Division 240 defines the armament and safety equipment for all boats, whether or not they are CE marked.
It also applies to canoes and kayaks longer than 3.50 metres (below, or if they do not meet the watertightness, stability and
buoyancy conditions defined in Division 245, these boats are considered beach gear).
REGISTRATION OF YOUR KAYAK OVER 3.50 M
RTM strongly recommends that you register your kayak in compliance with Division 245 regardless of your area of travel. This
procedure is free of charge and is carried out at the Departmental Directorate of Territories and the Sea - Delegation for the Sea
and the Coast. A navigation title will then be given to you, to be carried with you during each navigation session.
